Avoid These Mistakes When Trying To Find Business Development Jobs

without comments

The market is extremely competitive in the business industry. More people than ever have completed a bachelor’s degree or more for education. As the years pass the degrees offered by universities and colleges are more specific than ever as well. A business developer now must have a bachelors degree in business management and an MBA in marketing in most cases. If you are looking to find business development jobs avoid these mistakes so that you aren’t lost in the sea of educated applicants.

If you can get a business development related job after you get your bachelors degree but before you get your master’s degree, do so. The mistake many students make is going right from getting their bachelors degree to completing their masters degree. What happens in most of these situations is the student is a very educated candidate but has no experience and is being compared to other educated candidates that actually have experience. Take the time to get involved in the industry. Work part time and go to school part time. Take your Master’s courses online or volunteer at a company to shadow a business developing team. Being familiar with your line of work beyond the books is extremely important.

Another common mistake that individuals make who are looking to find business development jobs is applying with a closed mind. Business development can have a hundred different titles and can be found in almost any industry. Your qualifications for business development does not mean that you have to look for jobs titled business developer. People who search online for business developer jobs often get lost in the sea of other people who aren’t thinking outside of the box. Almost every industry has career positions that utilize the skills and education of a candidate that wants to be a business developer. These unique opportunities could also give you some flexibility with your line of work, pay scale and job requirements. Just because the position isn’t called business developer doesn’t mean it’s not a career perfect for a business developer.

The biggest mistake that applicants looking to find business development jobs make is working for an inexperienced entrepreneur who is operating a risky business. Every company starts with entrepreneurs but a majority of the companies fail within the first 6 months. You don’t want to be hired as the business developer for a company that has a short life expectancy. Do your research regarding the years the company has been around. Talk to clients or customers regarding their opinions and contact other employee of the company as well.
